Today,Dec.17th,is my birthday, Leslie and I celebrated by taking a tour of Herman Melvilles,New Bedford,Massachusetts.

It was a beautiful day here in the northeast,54 degrees and sunny.New Bedford was and still is a thriving fishing town. The whaling industry flourished from the 1830's to 1928.Whale oil was used to light lanterns in homes, candels were made from baleen.Whale oil was also used as transmission fluid in automobiles until 1925.The Nantucket sleighride occurred when the harpooner was successful in attaching his harpoon to the whale, then all hands held on as the whale pulled the boat thru the water until it tired, sometimes lasting up to four hours. After taking in the sights we enjoyed a lovely dinner at one of the local restaurants.Being my 62nd birthday I also was eligble for my Golden age Passport allowing me entry to all National Parks for free. Some pluses for getting older!
