Got underway quite early to make it to our Biltmore Estate tour time of 9:15 a.m. We arrived with time to spare, a good thing because they are very serious about arriving “within 15 minutes of your assigned tour time or you will forfeit your ticket.” So better early than late!

It took two hours to walk through the house, a self-guided tour with handheld recorder. At that, we didn't see the entire house but definitely enough of it to understand why it took George Vanderbilt five years to complete this “country home get-away.” We spent another two hours exploring the grounds and gardens designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead— a beautiful reminder of his landscaping genius.

Drove up to the estate vineyard and ate lunch at Cedric's (tavern named after the Vanderbilt's St. Bernard). Enjoyed the wine tasting and purchased 3 bottles of the ones we liked best (all for a good cause, of course – the continuing maintenance of the Estate!
