|A short update to let you know we have safely arrived in Iowa. It was a beautiful day for traveling with blue skies and white clouds, my favorite as you may already know! We made only one stop and that was at a nice rest area right at the SD/Minnesota border. We stretched our legs a bit and had a bite of lunch. When we reached the Iowa border there wasn't a good spot to pull over, so I took a pic of the Iowa sign as we raced by at 60 mph. Sorry about that all my Iowa residents, lol.
We knew that Ruthven was a small town located between Spencer & Emmetsburg & had done a bit of checking online for a place to camp for a few days. The Redwood Resort sounded good so thought we would start there. I neglected to write the address down so of course, didn't have it in the truck with us. Suzi, our GPS, couldn't find it. But we figured, being a resort and all, that we would eventually see a nice large sign or entrance for it. NOT!!! We roamed around through several miles of corn & soybean fields before I finally mentioned to Larry that at the very least we should try to find the lake. Being that it is located on Lost Island Lake that makes sense, right??? Well, let me tell you there are LOTS of lakes! Anyway, we finally located the right lake, found a 20x20 sign on a corner, made a right, then another right, past a cornfield and ta-da, arrived!
The office wanted to know if we had a reservation. Of course we didn't. We try to never make one in case weather or a change of plans holds us up. Anyway, he said fortunately he'd had a cancellation that morning. So, we took the last remaining spot for the next 3 nights. Apparently the fair is in town and the town fills up each year when it's here.
I'm excited to be in Iowa as this is my first time here and I have several relatives in the area. And my Dad & sister Elaine were both born here. Dad was raised here & worked here in his younger days until he left to join the service.
By the time Dad got out of the Marine Corp my grandparents had moved to California so he went there, where he met Mom. They moved back here, to Emmetsburg, for a short time when I was 9 months old. So I guess I have been here before after all, even though I don't remember it, lol! Anyway, I'll be trying to locate the old family home, the hospital etc while here to get a 'feel' for our family history. And to visit cousin Chrissy & her hubby Fred of course. More later, nite...
