Our rag tag group

just over the town of Piha

So the day after our Abesailing our final group of four hit the road leaving Auckland behind us and heading south. On the way to our first stop of Rotorua we found ourselves going thru the town where the Lord Of the Rings were filmed, the town seems to of renamed itself to add to the tourism revenue, we didn't stop. We also passed thru a town (didn't even know what it's called) that seemed to enjoy having a big everything. Big sheep, big dog, big oyster. . . . we actually almost stopped at this one.

By early afternoon we made it to the town of Rotorua and learned why it's called Sulphur City, besides having some of the largest amounts of thermal activity in the country the entire area smells. With a quick stop at Hell's gate ( the name got us to go in but it's a bit over rated) we headed off to Lake Taupo which was definetly a highlight of the trip so far with a laid back vibe, crystal clear waters and hot springs you could easily see how people get stuck there for months on end.
