Monte Sano State Park

|Arrived at Monte Sano State Park near Huntsville, Alabama. Set up at our site. Very mountainous area. En route, we could smell a strong, sweet aroma coming through the coach air vent and finally recognized it —honeysuckle! The roadside was full of the blossoms.

Drove over to park overlook – beautiful view of mountains. Went to Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. Huntsville was “watercress capitol of the world” until 1950 when the Werner Von Braun team moved from White Sands to Huntsville; ever after to be known as “Rocket City!”

Saturn 5 Rocket: 363 feet long and 6.2 million lbs. A payload rocket.
“Dream Chaser” will replace Space Shuttle. 1/3 size of shuttle but has space for2-7 people plus cargo and can land at any airport. (photo) Orbital spacecraft under development.
Saw space suits worn by astronauts, food, etc.; info on lives of astronauts, space race with Russia.
(Afternoon) Cathedral Caverns
John toured cave, almost a mile long, and I waited at log building/gift shop and read my NOOK book
“Boys in the Boat” about crew that won the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Bought rocks from Ganges River in India to pass along to David and Jess.
