We retraced our steps back to Tennant Creek on Saturday and then on to Katherine on Sunday. The drive was as scintillating as ever and we saw an even greater amount of roadkill!
Katherine was a nice place which seemed to be thriving in the middle of nowhere. We found a great motel run by a very friendly Aussie who dished out good, cheap food and gave us a great rate on our room. The Aussie hospitality does deserve it's reputation!
We went out to Katherine Gorge on Monday which was an amazing place. It's another area which has been handed back to the Aborigines so we walked through another politically correct display about how well that's all turned out! The gorge itself was spectacular and we saw it at a fascinating time; it's the Wet season and yet the waters are at Dry season levels. This is because they have had hardly any rain this year, a real worry for them but lucky for us as we haven't encountered any closed roads!
We did a two hour boat trip out to the first two gorges which were very different to each other. We saw some great scenery and even a freshwater crocodile basking on the bank. A good, if a little commercialised experience.
