Before I start we were once again in rural USA and did not get the blog done for yesterday until last night. If you did not read the blog for 1/28 and you would like to please go back and check it out. Now when I was a boy there was a TV Show called Rin Tin Tin that took place at Fort Apache. I had a corporal Rusty complete outfit and never missed this show that was on from 1954-57. Where is this all going? There IS a real Ft. Apache and it is in Arizona and we went to see it! We have been to many forts on our trip and they don't look like they did on TV. I was expecting a stockade fence and towers in the corners but Ft. Apache still had original (refurbished) buildings from the 1800's and the huge parade grounds across from the officers housing. It was really interesting. Did you know that during Teddy Roosevelt's tenure all Indian children were required to go to boarding school to learn the white man's culture? The school still exists but now only as a regular school. Then we went to Kinishba ruins just up the road. This National Historic Landmark has the ruins of housing for native people from 700 to 1200 AD. This was a truly amazing sight. There has been only a little preservation work done over the years. The guide book had 10 stops on the 1/3 mile walk and told us about everything we were seeing. We drove about an hour and a half to our camp for the night but what a trip. We drove into the Salt River Canyon on mountain switch backs and OH what beauty and splendor. It was fantastic. We can walk to church from our campground and we will be heading there shortly. Enjoy the pics.
