From Newcastle, we took a tiny train to Hexham. We learned that the bus which goes to Hadrian's Wall was leaving in an hour and fifteen minutes. Not wanting to wait, we hopped into a waiting taxi. We told the driver we wanted to hike the wall. I suggested we might start around Chester's Roman Fort, but he made some phone calls and recommended we start at Vindolanda and walk back towards Chester's. As he drove, it started to rain. He suggested if we wanted to quit at any point, we could call him and he'd pick us up. This proved to be a godsend.
