Custer, South Dakota
Jul 31, 2006
|July 19th We have arrived in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Went to a couple of campgrounds but one was full & the other couldn't accommodate our rig. Thank goodness, because we drove on down the road & found the perfect spot for us. Custer Mountain campground is located just 3 miles from the entrance to Custer State Park. What a great place! It is so beautiful here, the weather is perfect, the wildlife is everywhere & there is so much to do we don't know where to start!
July 21st went to a play "The Legend of Devil's Gulch" an historical fantasy of the Black Hills. What fun..and only $5.00 each. Tomorrow we are going to the Black Hills Playhouse to see Fiddler On The Roof. Wow, I got Larry to attend both of these! What's going on???
July 22nd went to a parade downtown. Walked all downtown. They have buffalo statues all over town, all decorated by different artists. They will be auctioned off on September 2nd. Paul won the auction last year for the one located in our campground. Very talented folks! We went to the car show also. Took some cool pics. Will post a few. Decided to take a drive into Custer Park. Beautiful! More pics.
July 24th went to Hill City to ride the 1880's train. What fun! 2 hour ride. Saw a lot of wildlife! See pics
July 25th went on the Wildlife loop in Custer State Park. Saw tons of prairie dogs, deer, Pronghorn Antelope and Bison (Buffalo). Onyx was so funny...she barked & barked at the deer, antelope etc but never made a peep at the buffalo!
July 26th we took the Needles Highway in state park. WOW! I could stay here for days! see the enclosed pics! We are so blessed to be in God's beautiful country!!
July 27th went to dinner with our new friends Dick & Lou Shoff. They have an Allegro Bay motorhome & are parked next to us. They have been here since June 1st and we can see why!
We went to dinner together downtown at the Cattleman's steakhouse & then to the Purple Pie Shop for dessert. They are full timers also & we have all decided to meet here again next year!
July 30th today we went to Deadwood, Sturgis & Spearfish. All very small towns with lots of history... We went to the Passion Play in Spearfish that depicts the last 7 days of Jesus's life with a cast of over 200! Awesome.
The bikers are starting to arrive for Sturgis. They seem to be getting older..baby boomers??? LOL
