Now on my way up the coast to Rio - decided to stop for a night in Curitiba as there is apparently a very scenic train ride from here through the mountains out to another island off the coast.

CURITIBA - PARANAGUA TRAIN JOURNEY

Decided to take the train to the coast from Curitiba, one of only three operational passenger lines remaining in Brazil. As the photos will show, I was very lucky to get a good, clear day - the first in about a week. The train descended over the mountains to the coast through Atlantic rainforests and was well worthwhile. The track was built in the 1890's and still had remaining 'railway' houses along it (although most were pretty derelict).

Paranagua itself was a dump, but managed to get out of there quick smart - onto a boat out to the Ilha do Mel.

Met up with some Americans from Colorado that were heading in the same direction as me (out to the island) - so tagged along.
