Canal tunnel entrance

Lower Slaughter

View over Gloucester

This morning was sunny & it’s my last day in this area so I spent the day exploring the Cotswolds. I had no clear destination, just followed interesting-looking signs.

The first place I found was the entrance to the eastern end of the long canal tunnel I learned about in Stroud a few days ago. The Victorians couldn’t build anything without making it fancy & this entrance is no exception. Apparently the western entrance at Daneway is gothic, with battlements but I don’t think it’s easily accessible.

There’s been feasibility reports confirming that this canal can be restored to full navigation & apparently they’ve already got most of the funding so it’s just a matter of time. It will make a huge difference to this area which is about ½ a mile down a narrow unmade road but there’s an old pub here which seemed to be doing a reasonable business today.

I stopped at Tetbury to get fuel at the Tesco supermarket & noticed they had 50% off some of their wines & champagnes so I couldn’t pass that by. Good Friday isn’t a holiday here – just Easter Monday is a Bank Holiday although the schools are all out.

I keep wondering why Good Friday is such a strict holiday in Australia when it’s not a holiday in the US or in France or the UK which are all strongly Christian countries. When did they change & why? Why have we held onto it? Not that I think it’s wrong, in fact it seems weird that everything isn’t closed.

I ended up in Lower Slaughter for lunch which was quite appropriate because I remember my parents raving on about it during their trip over here in 1955. I could visualize their photo but couldn’t find the angle Mum had taken it from. It is a lovely little village but there were plenty of others. I particularly liked Upper & Lower Swell because they didn’t have as many tourists poking around.

I came home on some very scenic back roads through Cheltenham & now it’s time to do some packing up, ready to move on to Wales tomorrow.

The Severn Tidal Bore is due to run just after 9:00am tomorrow & I thought I might try & see that on my way but I just watched a 5 star bore on YouTube & wasn’t that impressed. Tomorrow’s is only 2 star & the wind’s in the wrong direction so I don’t think it’s worth the effort.
