Well what can we say... getting from La Paz to San Pedro de Atacama turned out to be a real feat...
We had flights booked from La Paz to take us first to Iquique (Northern Chile), then on to Antofagasta (Northern Chile). From there we were to get a taxi into town & get on the supposedly 'empty' Antofagasta to San Pedro de Atacama bus.
Well yes you guessed it, the flight part went well enough. We got a taxi relatively easily from the Antofagasta airport into town... arrived at the bus station & were told... no sorry, sold out till 9:30 tomorrow morning... arrrrrrgh bl....dy TurBus.
So, now stuck in the 'God forsaken'Antofagasta we needed to figure out what to do... we had a hotel booked in San Pedro which we'd face cancellation charges for if we welched on. Also, there was no garuantee we would get on the next day TurBus.
So, hey, why not!!! we rented a car. Which actually, was rented from Avis, but ended up being a co-operation between Avis, Budget, Europecar & Hertz... Yes, I was totally amazed at how much they all bent over backwards to help us get a car, maps, documents sorted, translation etc etc.. Five star marks to them.
Anyway, we then drove the 4 hrs from Antofagasta to San Pedro, arriving very late (11pm) but grateful to be there.
NEVER EVER EVER RELY ON A COMPANY CALLED 'TURBUS'.... here's the name again (I spit on the ground) TURBUS....SUCKS.
Ok.. rant over...
