2018-08-19.Through Ohio to Nappanee, Indiana
Observations and thoughts about this part of mid-America....
Each town's borders is marked not by the "Welcome to" sign but by the Dollar General store. Water towers proudly proclaim the names of the local high school football teams in each community. Racing freight trains across the Indiana farmland. Listening to the song of the train whistle seemingly ever present on the wind. This is the heartland. Small towns tired and worn but all boasting an American Legion post with FFA signs punctuating the roadsides and farmer's fields proudly displaying the brand of corn seed used. Here, with cornstalks sighing against the brush of the breeze, it's hard to imagine hungry Chicago only 100 miles away and sad to see abandoned farmhouses dressed in clinging vines awaiting a true love's touch still guarding memories of days of prosperity.
We reached Nappanee, Indiana, home of the RV industry and the Newmar Corporation, manufacturer of Pottsluck (Dutchstar). We needed to get replacement parts so decided to take advantage of the free hookups at the factory. So interesting to see all the different Newmar RVs both old and new. We are obviously 15 years old so....rather old but still, in good shape. Still, some of these new models are amazing in size and design. Someday..
