June 26 – Travel to West Yellowstone, MT and Touring Western Yellowstone NP

We had a late start this morning. A small, 1/8” weld holding a latching pin on our 5th wheel hitch failed and I had to find a welder in town. Our Travel Luck worked again. The garage was closed on Saturday but the on-call mechanic with basic welding skills was just arriving at the shop. He welded and ground and we put the parts back together.

As a follow-up to our non-reservation issue at the Gardiner Campground, Kathleen went to the campground office to inform them that we had a mechanical problem and may not be able to leave before checkout time. While she was at the office, she spoke to the person who was calling about 30 folks who had made reservations in January and February to ask them when they wanted to have a campsite. The wrong dates were reserved and no confirmation e-mails were sent in those two months.

Apparently, we were the first to arrive with the reservation screw up which resulted in a study of other reservations made in the first two months of the year.

Our non-park-road route to West Yellowstone was very nice – flat, scenic, smooth etc. The KOA Campground is large and very nice.

After we set-up camp, we headed to the west entrance to Yellowstone NP and toured the geysers and mud pots.

The weather was perfect today. Tonight’s temp is to be 38F so we will use the feathers. :)
