We woke to rain which was rumored to be the remnants of the extensive Atlantic Hurricane Juaquin that was drenching the East Coast of the USA. We took the scenic route to Lisbon along the ocean. The waves were crashing on the shore. Our first stop was at the Belem Tower which was built in the 16th century as part of Lisbon’s defense system. Next was the monument to discovery which faces the harbor. Portugal was a leading country in the age of discovery and this monument is a testimony to that time. There is also a bi-plane on exhibit. This plane was the first to cross the Atlantic and land in Brazil. Despite the rain, we managed a quick walk through the Alfama, Lisbon’s oldest district.
As we rejoined the bus, we said farewell to our new friends as we headed off to various hotels in Lisbon and to the airport where we boarded a plane for Madrid and our last day in these countries.
