|After leaving Hell's Canyon my route calls for me to follow the Columbia River all the way to the Pacific Coast much as Lewis & Clark did. As a side note, they never travelled into Hell's Canyon but had followed the Snake River in the opposite direction until it joined up with the Columbia.
As I travelled westward I suddenly became aware of large snow-covered peaks appearing almost ghost-like in the distance. These would be part of the Cascades. At one point I crossed the river into Washington in order to try to get a better picture.
It is strange how these peaks just materialize without ever really being clearly defined.
