Seals

Oregon Coast

Cannon Beach

We drove back to the Oregon Coast today from North of Portland. We left in chilly and very cloudy weather but found the sun when we got the coast. On the way we stopped near Fort Clatsop where members of the Lewis and Clark expedition came to find salt. They arrived Jan. 2 and stayed until Feb. 21, 1806. They found stone, built an oven, brought in sea water to boil and extracted 5 bushels of salt in the process. They also hunted elk, fished, found fresh water to drink and plenty of wood to burn. The salt was needed for the return trip back home in the East. We left this area headed for Cannon Beach and on the way saw 4 cow elk grazing on the side of the road.

Cannon Beach was very nice, little to no wind, which Lynd really liked and I finally got to walk on the beach. We could see a light house in the distance sitting atop a big rock. People were on the beach, some trying to fly kites, dogs digging in the sand and children playing. It was a nice scene. At this time it was still misty and only 55 degrees, but with no wind, it was great.

We then drove the Three Capes Scenic Route towards Cape Meares. The Cape Meares Light House is there. Pelagic Cormorants, Pigeon Guillemots and Tufted Puffins are often found here on the rocks and in the water. This is a breeding area for quite a few shore birds.

We saw Seals on the rocks sunning themselves. They were quite a distance away, but we could still hear them barking.

We drove into the Camp Look-Out area, but it was mainly for camping and hiking. We could not see the water unless we went into the camping area, which was a pay to camp area, so we just admired all the beautiful trees and quietly left. It was a scenic drive most of the way back to Portland. Of course once you get close to Portland, the traffic reminds you that you are in a large city. Traffic was slow at times, but never came to a full stop, so that was good. We got back to the RV, tired and ready for some dinner, but it was a good day and we really enjoyed seeing the Pacific Ocean one more time.

Tomorrow we plan to go to Mt. Hood. Hopefully it will be a sunny day so we can actually see the mountain and get some good pictures.

Hope each of you is having a good weekend.

Take care.

Clara
