the glacier

How many warning signs do you need!?

Close up with walkers on the glacier

We drove 40 km to Hokitika and sat out the heavy rain once again. We do seem to get in our morning coffee breaks! Lots of jade places here and Michael bought me a beautifully carved pendant, you will notice me wearing in all the photos from now on! There was so much to choose from, but when you see the right one, you know it.

Rain stopped and we headed to our final destination for the day, Franz Josef glacier. It is so different from our Canadian glaciers. It is smaller and the terminal face ends in rain forest. They get on average 7 meters of rain here per year. I guess we'll be lucky to ride in dry weather after all! We walked to the base of the glacier and were lucky enough to see most of it under the clouds.

Tomorrow it's off to the largest glacier in New Zealand, Fox glacier.
