Campbell 2008 Western Trip - Colorado, Utah and Arkansas National Parks travel blog

October 14, 2008

We arrived in Alamosa, CO intact.

The Monarch Pass at 11,700’ was a dream compared to the 10% downhill grade in a freezing cold slot canyon with 2 miles of ice covered pavement near Cimarron, CO – white knuckles at 25 MPH. :|

We visited the Great Sand Dunes NP after we set up camp in Alamosa. Again, we are too late for ranger hikes or talks.

Tomorrow, we will return to the park and hike up a dune or two. The highest is over 700’.

We had our late lunch/dinner at Oscar’s Mexican Restaurant in downtown Alamosa. They had a buffet of good eats. I asked the price and our waitress stated that it was $9.85 and $8.85 for seniors – a good deal since the dessert selection included 8” square sopapia and strawberry topped cheese cake. :) We both chose the buffet. When our check arrived, two ‘senior’ meals were listed. This was the first time that Kathleen has been considered a ‘senior’ with chagrin. :)
