Hi Lilly and Joe, friends from Shantytown!

Farewell Hokitika

Although Greymouth was very grey for most of the time, there were some highlights. We enjoyed our time at Duke's backpacker's. Our hosts Shoshi and Dori recommended we visit Shantytown, a recreated 1900's pioneer town and inspired by the great coast gold rushes of the 1860's. It was great!!!! Sisley and Ethan got to pan for gold, ride a steam train, and dress up in prospectors clothes. At the end of the day we all got a feel for how hard life was for the immigrants, such as the Chinese, who came to New Zealand in search for gold. We met a family from the U.K. and ended up closing Shantytown, as we were the last ones out. Hi to Lily and Joe from Sisley and Ethan.

We also got a chance to visit Hokitika where we all got a pounamu/jade carved necklace which is meaningful in the Maori culture.
