This is my 17th visit to Vilcabamba, about 5 hours south of Cuenca near the city of Loja. Vilcabamba is called The Valley of Longevity and designated as a Blue Zone, a demographic and geographic area of the world where people live measurably longer lives. Blue Zones also located in Japan, Italy, Costa Rica, Greece, and the Seventh-Day Adventist settlement in Loma Linda, California. Maybe there is something to this theory because there are an inordinate amount of very fit and healthy elderly farmers in the Vilcabamba area. Because of this phenomenon there is even a government center for the study of gerontology in town.
We went to Vilcabamba to enjoy the setting, the Hosteria Izhcayluma resort complete with daily yoga classes, and to show the area to friends Janie, Amanda, and Frank. You can see by the photos that we enjoyed our stay.
