|Up at 4:30 AM China time and a quick shower, final packing, and drag our suitcases down to the lobby. Awaiting us was a pathetic boxed breakfast - a hard boiled egg, yogurt, and a bun...
A van to the airport on virtually deserted streets was different - but 5:30 AM is a bit early even in China.
Then it begins. Flight to Beijing. Wait )(and some last minute shopping). Then the 12 hour trans-polar flight (starting at 1:30 PM) where we flew right around the night to arrive at JFK at 2:30 in the afternoon of the same day - a one hour flight! Being frazzled we got through customs without problems, but left a package of Chinese rice paper scrolls somewhere. Hope someone likes them!
Anyway, a bus over to La Guardia and wait a bit, then a flight to Charlotte, then finally a flight (delayed) to Lynchburg, arriving at 12:45 or so - not really sure as I hadn't slept the whole time. Then a taxi ride back to the house by 1:30.
In total it took about 32 hours. We unpacked most of the stuff (not much broken) and staggered off to bed.
All in a a great trip! Ten air flights a;; together ( a bit much) Next year... Peru? Thailand?
