Up in the Bay of Islands, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between the British and Maoris to protect them from the French. In the National Reserve, we saw the largest war canoe in the world - the Maori Canoe called Ngatoklmatawhaorua. (get your tongue around that one!) There is also a very detailed Whare Runanga (meeting house) and Treaty House with photos and copies of the original treaty. Check out some of the signatures of the Maori chiefs. It must have been quite a sight to have all of these tribal chiefs all together deciding the fate of their people and NZ.
