Colony of Avalon sign

Cobblestone

A well. Supposedly haunted.

What a great view, right?

Today was a trip out to Ferryland and the Colony of Avalon, which, in 1621, is one of the oldest settlements by the English in the New World. Started by George Calvert, Lord Baltimore (the father of Cecil Baltimore, for whom Baltimore, Maryland was founded), the colony lasted for about a decade before the extreme cold, disease, and oh, yeah, the French drove them out.

Great little walking tour, and I got to see some fantastic artifacts, as well.

Other bit of news: the first hurricane of the Atlantic season is due to hit Newfoundland tonight into tomorrow as a strong post-tropical depression, though, other than the rain and wind, shouldn't affect things too much. Yay. It is also unlikely to affect my trip home, though, I'll be honest - it's going to suck to leave.

Just a few more days here on the Rock, then back home to KC by way of Newark.
