|D.C. Traffic is interesting. Did you know they have guard rails in the center median of the freeway that move from one side to another creating lanes to assist with traffic flow? What's up with L.A.??? They could learn from this!
We stayed in College Park, Maryland for 10 days in the heat of summer at the Cherry Hill RV Park. They were so helpful in navigating the bus/metro/road/tickets in the area. This was the worst stretch of heat for us and for Washington D.C. in a long time.
I visited here in 1998 briefly on a business trip. For years I wanted to return and spend more time. Ten days were just what we needed to really see D.C. We visited/toured all these sites via a bus from the RV park to Union Station to catch the City Hop on/Hop off bus or via the green line metro from Maryland to the city:
Smithsonian Museums - Air & Space, Natural History (Hope diamond), American History
Attended Sunday church service at the National Cathedral
Arlington National Cemetary
Iwo Jima Memorial
White House (outside only), White House museum
Ford's Theater and Peterson House (where President Lincoln died)
National Portrait Gallery
Pentagon Area Shopping Mall (4 story)
4th of July Parade on Constitution Avenue!!
Folklife Festival at the Smithsonian Mall
Capitol Building; House of Representative Gallery and Senate Gallery
Library of Congress (beautiful)
Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials
War Memorials - WW I, WW II, Korean, Vietnam War
Martin Luther King Memorial
Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt Memorials
Holocaust Museum (very moving)
U.S. Bureau of Engraving tour
Unfortunately, the weather was over 105 multiple days and a couple of huge wind storms struck the area during our visit. There were many downed trees throughout the city, especially sad to see at Arlington National Cemetary. There were extended power outages for many days there with some elderly in real trouble due to the heat and lack of electricity. The very hot 4th of July we spent in our nations capitol led us to enjoy the fireworks from our air conditioned motor home. We just couldn't take any more heat after a long day in the city. On a day we took a bus to the city, the metro line we normally take had a track warp! Can you believe such thick metal can warp?
I don't need to return anytime soon but we are both so glad we took the time to see and do so many things here.
