We left Puerto Inca and the small neighboring town of Chala behind this morning bound for Arequipa, making our way along the southern Peruvian coast stopping in the small town of Atico to gas up and then continuing thru the Pescadores Valley with sweeping ocean views. The next valley we passed thru was the rich green Ocona Valley whose river is home to fresh water shrimp...unfortunately shrimping stops from January 15 to April 15 for shrimp breeding season and so we were unable to get fresh shrimp for lunch...the next windy sand-swept valley is the Camana Valley where we stopped at the Riconcito Trujillano Restaurant for lunch after which we climbed back on the bus and had barely gotten settled when we made our way into dairy country and the town of Majes where we stopped to sample some artisan cheeses and yogurt...some of the group bought cheese to go with the olives that were purchased yesterday...the area is home to "Gloria", Peru's largest supplier of dairy products...back on the bus we made our way across the Puente Seguas bridge and thru the Vitor Valley and then carried on our way past the town of La Joya and then thru the Uchemayo Valley...but oh oh...trouble ahead as a truck obviously going a little too fast around a bend in the road toppled over and lost its load, back ing traffic just as we approached Arequipa...after some maneuvering by our driver to get us out of the backlog of vehicles, a little further along the way we could see the ragged peak of the volcano Chachani, towering above Arequipa at some 6,075 metres...we made our way thru the city of some one million inhabitants to the Hotel Meliana, our home for the next two nights...
