|I got on Kiwi Experience and we left Nelson for Westport. The bus ride was interesting with a couple of stops for walks including a short walk at Nelson Lakes National Park and a walk that took us through a large tunnel. We stopped around the Buller River at a small waterfall (Maruia Falls) which wasn't spectacular but nice. I am a bit disappointed because I didn't get to raft the Buller Gorge. Apparently not too many people are interested and do it elsewhere. I offered to stay and extra day if I could guarantee a trip tomorrow, but it didn't happen. Oh well, I guess I will try and go in Queenstown. Apparently the winter tourism shuts down some of the rafting trips I had hoped to conquer despite the fact the daytime highs in most of the areas are as warm as Canadian summers. I am changing my planned itinerary as I go so hopefully it is still as fun.
Westport is just a through stop and there is nothing to do in town except drink so we had a beach bonfire. The night was clear and everyone drank "The Goon" which is a cheap plastic bag of white wine. For some the party then spilled over to a pub and one of the guys in my dorm came back in a stupor and woke everyone up. I heard this was one of the tours where everyone has hangovers the next day and this was the first bit of proof. We will see if it improves or gets worse.
We have a full day tomorrow and will end up at Lake Mahinapua (Ma-hee-na-poo-ah).
I will keep you updated.
