....leaving Picton behind....

....and arriving....

........in....

............Wellington....

Today we're off to the north island and NZ's capital city of Wellington and we made our way from Kaikoura to "the Store" at Kekerengu where we stopped for morning tea and then it was the same drive past the saltworks near Seddon and the Montana Winery near Blenheim on our way to Picton where we arrived at about 11:30 a.m. Our Interisland Ferry, "Kaitaki" was scheduled to depart Picton at 1:15 p.m.....we got ourselves checked in and waited for the cars and trucks and buses to finish loading and then the foot passengers were allowed on board and we were on our way. The Cook Strait crossing takes approximately three hours and we amused ourselves with a pint of beer and watching the Australia/India Cricket 4th Test Match that was taking place in Adelaide....before we knew it we were coming into Wellington Harbour....a trip topside to have a look as the boat came in let us know very quickly as to why Wellington has been bestowed with the moniker "Windy Welly"....after disembarking we made our way to the bus terminal (following Ryan's directions) and caught a trolley bus that took us from Lambton Quay down to Courtney Place where the Wellington City YHA was located on Cambridge Terrace. After getting settled we wandered down to the local supermarket and picked up some groceries and cooked for ourselves in the hostel kitchen....pasta and meat sauce with a nice salad was the order of the day...it felt good to cook for ourselves once again.... after dinner we went for a walk in the area around the hostel which was alive with people choking the pubs and bars, having a bite to eat and a couple of drinks.....the festivities must have continued well into the night as we kept hearing doors slamming and people coming and going at the hostel til the wee hours of the morning....
