Today was a road trip to The Porkies. The Porcupine Mountains is in the remote northwest corner of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The area is 60,000 acres of old-growth hardwood and hemlock forest. It is Michigans largest state park.

The drive is along the shore of Lake Superior for a short distance and then you are surrounded by forest. We stopped at a small marker along side the road which marked an old mine shaft that was housing bats. We walked into it but not far. It was dark and damp.

There are three main areas to cover. The Lake of the Clouds, Summit Peak, Presque Isle Scenic Area.

We did some hiking. It's a 100 yard stroll from the parking lot to the summit to view The Lake of the Clouds. The view of the lake and the forest surrounding the area was spectatular.

Summit Peak, was about a mile round trip. It was the climbing and stairs that got to you. We counted 171 stairs, then the hike up the observation tower was another 54 steps. Larry did that hike. The views were worth it.

At the Presque Isle area we hiked to two waterfalls. Again, many stairs both up and down. It was a 2.5 mile hike, however we did take a shortcut back.

One of the confusing things about the U.P. is the time zone change. We are camped on the line of the Eastern and Central time zone. You drive in and out of it all day long. So when we stopped for something to eat...we didn't know if it was a late lunch or early dinner.
