|Tuesday we took the Success Loop Drive, a scenic tour of the high country through the Schell Creek Range. This 37 mile drive is one that few people outside of the local area ever bother to take…let alone know about. We were pleased that Mom came along for the ride today as well. She's lived in the Ely area for over nine years & I believe this is the first trip she's made 'off pavement'...:)
The road begins about 8 miles South of Ely, where, at the junction of Highway 93 we made a left and headed toward Cave Lake State Park. We stopped at the lake for just a few minutes to check out the water levels & the pretty colors in the area. Wish it was warm enough to put the boat in. We love to troll around, watch the wildlife & breathe in the fresh air. Definitely not happening this trip however, way too cold!
Just past the lake turnoff, the pavement ends and for most of the rest of the loop it is a well graded dirt road. There's not much traffic & I think we only encountered two other vehicles the entire trip today. It was a nice day for our trip with temps in the high 50's. We stopped a couple of times to stretch our legs & take in the view too. We encountered two separate groups of deer, one group close to the edge of the road. They weren't very frightened so we stopped to watch them for a bit & take a couple of pics of course. The road winds north past several campgrounds along the Steptoe Creek, through lovely stands of Aspen & over the mountain range until 33 beautiful miles later finds its way back to US 93 just north of McGill. It took us just under 3 hours. If you happen to be in this area during the right time of year we think you would enjoy this lovely drive. Just bring plenty of water, a picnic lunch & a light jacket. And a camera of course~
