This fantastic adventure continued with a visit to Lockport NY to see my college roommate David Root, his wonderful wife Lora and their last stay at home daughter Sara (upcoming sophomore in college). But before we got there we stopped at the Indian reservation and fueled up with diesel for the big honkin' dually at just $3.86.9!!! You might think this a rather high price BUT NY State has the highest fuel prices in any state we have visited so far. Anyway, David is an original BF'er and a great friend to all of us. I had so much fun living with him as a roommate and after we all graduated David spent a lot of time at our house in Batavia. Shirley actually calls him our son. David would come for a weekend visit and stay 3 or 4 weeks. We asked David and Lora if we could go see the locks on the Erie Canal (after all this IS Lockport). Beautiful weather day. We headed off for lunch (Western NY staple Beef on Weck for moi)then to one of two Erie Canal Museums in Lockport. The Erie Canal once completed, solidified NY City as major harbor as the country was moving west. Affordable shipping of goods east and west was an economic boom. Then to the locks themselves. Just as we walked up a tour boat came into the locks and we got to see them in action. A stop into the second museum right at the locks and some fantastic view of the old 5 stair step locks, what an engineering marvel in the 1800's, and then it was back to the house. David grilled chicken and Lora prepared a fantastic salad dish, green beans and warm bread and we chowed down. YUM. After talking the evening away we headed for the camper parked at the curb (FREE NIGHT!). Fun fun day. Off to Shirley's hometown Elmira NY and more family visits for the next few days.Enjoy the pics.
