As many of you know, I have been working on a credit card churn to collect points/miles for extending our retirement travel budget. It is a challenging hobby with the need for spread sheets and careful tracking but so far it has served us well in the first few free flights/hotels (think London for the hotel and the roundtrip air from home to London-Greece) but has not met my original intention of being able to fly business or first class to make it more comfortable and less stressful for international flights where upgrades are not automatic. This trip may be the initiation. In acquiring the American Express platinum card and finally flying through a city that HAS one of their upscale lounges, I have gained access to the Centurian lounge (better than an airline lounge with upscale wine and liquor choices, real food and an expresso machine- from this new addition, John is now sold on the credit card scam) and a rebate on some flying expenses allowing me to upgrade our flights to business class. This is a huge treat for our 14+ hour flight from San Francisco to Sydney. Already we have appreciated the additional space, free drinks, big pillow, comforter and menu selections. ( not even mentioning the "amenities" kit with Cowshed body products, a toothbrush, eye mask, tissue pack, mints, a comb and a case but alas, no pajamas like my brother seems to get). Along with a better quality headset, a reclining/lay flat seat and improved entertainment system, one could get used to this! I will check in again at hour 13 and see if I am still enthusiastic.
