MONTEREY

DRIVE TO MONTEREY

It is only 100 miles from Half Moon Bay to Monterey traveling along the coastline, so we took our time and made several stops to see sites and take pictures along the way.

About halfway between Half Moon Bay and Monterey is the quaint town of Santa Cruz. The Surfing Museum and amusement park is a throwback to times past. It's worth an hour or so to stop, tour and take pictures.

THE CLEMENT MONTEREY HOTEL

We chose the Clement Monterey Hotel as it is very centrally located, it is on the bay, it is new, and it is an Intercontinental Hotel, one of our hotel memberships. We had not made a reservation in advance and since we were there off season during the week, we were able to negotiate a reasonably good rate for an oceanfront suite. One of the benefits of not having a reservation is being able to do what we did. However, there is also the risk of not getting either the hotel or type of room you want when you don’t have a reservation.

WALKING TOUR OF MONTEREY

There are two excellent walking tours to take from the center of Monterey. One is north along the shoreline that has lots of shops, restaurants, hotels, etc. The other is south along the shoreline that is a more scenic walk. Since we only had time to take one of these walks, we decided to take the northern route. It was an excellent choice as you will see from photos of the variety of places there were to see and visit.

17 MILE DRIVE AND PEBBLE BEACH

One of the great drives to take in the U.S. is 17 Mile Drive. It is the scenic route between Monterey and Pebble Beach resort, the famous golf resort partially owned by Clint Eastwood. On our second day in Monterey we took this lovely drive and had lunch at The Lodge at Pebble Beach overlooking the 18th hole. The oysters were the best we had ever had in the U.S.

CARMEL

Carmel is lovely, very upscale town just south of Pebble Beach. We simply did not have time to go there. On our next trip we would add another day or two to see Carmel and take the south coastal walk in Monterey.
