Walking the NY High Line

9-11 Memorial

Oculus - World Trade Center PATH Station

Fearless Girl - Wall Street

August 29 - we left from Long Beach airport on Jet Blue bound for Eastern Europe (Estonia and Poland) with a stop at New York for a few days at the US Open in Flushing Meadows. Upon arrival at JFK we hailed a cab to our Comfort Inn in Queens, our lodging for the next four nights. Navigating through construction zones and one-way streets our cab driver finally found the hotel. The neighborhood is undergoing some major renovation and what is not should be. Having settled in we checked out dining choices - pizza it is at Lucky's. Then to bed as tomorrow is the first day of our four sessions of tennis at the Billy Jean King Tennis Center and the US Tennis Open (one of the four major tournaments).

August 30 - New York and the US Open. Today's ticket for tennis is for the evening session and we cannot get on the grounds until 6:00 pm and into our seats on Ashe stadium at 7:00 pm or until the day matches have ended. So having the day to explore we head off to Manhattan to walk the High line and see the 9-11 memorial. The hotel clerk suggested a diner near the metro station for breakfast. Breakfast at the hotel is included but they have no kitchen so it is all cooked off-site and warmed in a microwave (including fried eggs and sausage)! We did not find the diner until after breakfast at a deli/bagel place - Pumpernickel's. We hop the metro to one end of the High Line and begin the walk south toward lower Manhattan observing lots of construction and art along the way. The High line is a park built on an old elevated rail line running for 1.45 miles and provides a different perspective of the city than the street view. There are many opportunities to stop for food and drinks. For a refresher we stopped at Chelsea Market for an ice tea and a coke. On to the 9-11 memorial and Wall Street. The 9-11 memorial is very sobering but beautiful with the towers footprints engraved with the names of the victims. On our walk to Wall Street there were four New York Counter Terrorism policemen hanging out in the front of a building in attempting to get an unnoticed photo of them some tourists asked to pose - so I attempted to get a picture of the back of their shirt and ended up having my photo taken with one of them. Then it was on to see the recent statue of 'fearless girl' staring down the bull of Wall Street. We must get back to Queens and on to the tennis. Near our hotel we had seen a 'steak' restaurant- M. Wells - that appeared rather non-description but inviting. Having looked at the menu we opted to share the stacked pork chop as opposed to the $150 porterhouse steak! We capped the evening by joining the crowds at the tennis tournament watching the Venus Williams/Oceane Dodin and Jo-Wilifred Tsonga/Denis Shapovalov matches from our quite high-up but good seats in Arthur Ashe stadium! - JC
