Back to my Roots

Jane travel blog
Yes, it has been about 12 years since we were last in South Africa and Alison’s (Cameron’s sister) 60th birthday seems like an excellent excuse to return for a holiday.
Of course this trip will also fuel my ** DRD4-7R< (‘Wanderlust Gene’) as my travel withdrawal symptoms become obvious, enduring that niggling sense that I just have to be somewhere – anywhere – else, my primal resourcefulness requiring to be nourished and exercised…
I've always known I was born to travel and quite relieved to learn that my inherent urge to travel and tendencies to have bags and passports packed at the ready, can actually be traced back to the work of a solitary, rogue DNA segment. At least I now know that I’m not 'totally weird' and only as weird as 20% of our population who also carry this crazy gene.
Hugely excited and thrilled to be returning to Africa, I can already smell and taste Africa (I only ever understood Wilbur Smith's description of Africa once I was living away from Africa) and relish the prospect of reuniting with both family and friends.
The Plan is to spend a couple of weeks in Port Elizabeth with Wendy and family who have kindly offered to take me on a road trip along the Garden Route to Cape Town. I will meet Cameron in Cape Town at Alison’s and we will fly out to Namibia for some special game watching at Etosha National Park, return to Cape Town for 2 weeks (Alison’s birthday celebration, Cape Wineries and Cape Town culture), Cameron returns to Oz and I return to PE to share Lynn’s school holidays with her before also returning home to Australia.
Sounds like a plan……

**DRD4-7R is a variant of the dopaminergic neuroreceptor dubbed ‘the Wanderlust Gene’ found in around twenty per cent of us and amongst its traits, (according to researcher David Dobbs),is a strong urge to explore new places, ideas, foods and relationships, as well as a tendency to embrace adventure, movement and change.
