Beth and family in Sierra Leone 2013

Beth travel blog
Welcome to my trip journal! I leave Tuesday the 19th for London where I will spend a couple of days with cousins before joining my brother, David, and his son, Andrew, for our trip to Sierra Leone.

Vaccinations
Polio, Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, Tetanus, Flu, Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis, Pneumonia
Typhoid pills
Took my first malaria pill yesterday. No hallucinations yet.
Sprayed all my clothes with mosquito spray and placed them in plastic bags.
And I am truly looking forward to this visit to a part of the world I have never seen.

Dena, my brother David's wife, has been traveling to this part of the world for many years. A professor at Lawrence University, Dena takes her students there every year. They raise funds to help students attend school because beyond 5th grade, it costs $30 a year to attend. Dena is currently on sabatical in Sierra Leone.

I will join David and Andrew (nephew) in London on Saturday. We arrive in Sierra Leone on Sunday.

Itinerary from Dena

we are looking forward to your arrival - My plan is to go to Laaka Beach on Monday, March 25, i think that we will go to ConfortiSchool on March 26 or 27, and then also visit Njala University on Thursday, the 28th, stay in Bo for the night and see Dr. Maligi, and then I have booked tents at Tiwai Island nature center for March 29 and 30th. We will stay in Bo on Easter night, March 31. Still not sure about April 1, 2, 3. Depends on what you want to do.

About your arrival - rather than pick you up, I think that the three of you should take the hovercraft and I will meet you at the dock in Aberdeen. There will be a man at the airport - Ahusine - who will help you with your luggage and get through custorms. You will need to pay him 20,000 Leones for the cart and help ($5.00). You should change $200.00 at the change window - at the airport just as you are leaving the customs/security area. The tickets on the hovercraft will be $40.00 each. Alusine will call Mrs. Maligi when you arrive, so then we will leave to meet the hovercraft. Your plane comes in at 5:30 and the hovercraft will go about 7:30 a.m. and takes about 30 minutes.
